En Travesti Ensemble explores gender representation, identity and ambiguity in opera, song and oratorio. Travesti roles, gender-neutral casting, the castrati tradition and radical gender presentation are aspects of the Western vocal tradition that received little attention until the late 20th Century. Through song series, oratorio and opera productions, we contribute to the growing awareness of classical music’s rich history of gender subversion and exploration, and bring to public attention repertoire that has been unjustly forgotten.
